Summer's last heat blast
We work alot outside on the farm...a couple of hot days like today isn't so bad, but I think this is day 5 in a row, and still two to go. We're tired. We keep plenty of fresh water available for cows and calves, run overhead fans 24hr/day, sprinkle water on the cows and breeding age heifers. We really have to take care of our own fluid intakes as well...a few years back, we figured out how to make a really effective electrolyte drink, and it is a necessity in summer, like insulated overalls and boots are in winter.
A good sense of humor and positive attitude about work and cows and people and repair bills and life are also valuable to us year round...farming is a high stakes, oftentimes high stress business, but we have been so privileged to farm the ground and care for the animals we have. We know lots of people who work hard to help our business by delivering feed, delivering fuel, delivering bedding, harvesting crops, hauling milk, repairing equipment, and more.
I'm tired from all the work in this heat, so I'm going to leave it at that...time to "hit the hay." Sallie
